The included Power DVD software works just fine for playback and I was glad that they included it.Ĭons: Very minor quibble with the blue LED light on the front it is quite bright and if it's in your line of sight it could be bothersome. Load times are quite fast and the drive runs quietly and efficiently. That was a nice inclusion for the last DVD burner I bought a few weeks ago did not include one and cost me a few extra dollars. Is a SATA drive and it replaced and old IDE DVD Rom in my Dell XPS400.Ī SATA power adapter was included in the retail edition of the drive which converts the 4 pin Molex connector to SATA power.

Pros: A great 8X Blu-Ray reader for the price which also happens to be a darn good DVD burner with LightScribe ability as well. My reader came with firmware version 1.0 which was easily flashed to version 2.0 with the firmware and flash utility provided at the LG website. Kind of bummed that my older version 8 Ultra didn't work though. However downloaded a updated version of PowerDVD 7.3 OEM provided from a link at LG's website and it worked flawlessly.

Wouldn't work with my older retail version of Cyberlink PowerDVD 8 Ultra - kept getting a video card driver error message using Windows 7. Also be advised that during blu ray playback this hits your primary hard drive pretty hard too (even on a fairly beefy htpc system with 4gb ram, intel socket 775 dual core and HD5750). Overall Review: If your htpc is visible and near your tv set the blinking blue activity light might become an annoyance until you get used to it. The retail package contains a sata cable, molex to sata power converter, four installation screws and the installation disk. At it's regular price of $119.99 it is a good buy, if you catch it on sale for $89.99 :) it is a complete steal. I spent two months wrangling over whether I wanted a stand alone br player or a reader for my HTPC, and I can honestly say I'm glad I integrated the blu ray capability into my htpc.

This drive is very quiet and read speeds are adequate to provide smooth blu ray playback on a 50" Samsung Plasma 720p set.

$20 more for a full fledged br reader and dvd/cd burner I figured I'd go with an all-in-one solution for the htpc. I didn't buy the drive for burning or lightscribe functionality, the purchase was primarily for a pc based blu ray reader. Pros: Bought mine when it was on sale for $89.99 and for that price you cant go wrong. If this is the case, installing the driver for the specific SATA controller in your system (in my case, an Intel ICH6, meaning Intel Matrix Storage Manager 7.0) resolves the issue! And if you're like me and need a driver from an older version of that software, it's possible to extract the necessary driver file (iaachi.inf) from the installation package by running it with the "-a" command line switch and, while the software is running, search the C:\Windows\Temp folder for the file.

On my system, it meant that I'd have to wait an hour between putting the Blu-Ray in the drive and watching the movie because PowerDVD would freeze, the drive become unresponsive, and the hard drive activity light would come on. Overall Review: On at least some older systems, Windows 7 installs a generic SATA controller driver which causes problems with Blu-Ray playback.

No need to pay for an expensive upgrade.Ĭons: Included software isn't technically Windows 7-compatible, but compatibility patches are available on the CyberLink website.ĭrive needs a firmware update to 2.00 before Windows 7 will recognize it, and the updater won't work in Windows 7, but it can be run from the Windows 7 Startup Repair environment. Included software outputs full 5.1 channel surround sound (can't do 7.1). Then I was given 2 options for replacement - send me prepaid shipping labels via email or give them a credit card and they ship the replacement and await your return. The Rep then asked the normal questions about the drive and myself. We discussed what was wrong - and what I had done to test the drive (put it into another computer - same problem).

My call to LG Customer Support was answered on the first ring and my session lasted about 15 minutes. Tonight I decided to try and get it repair. The drive was a Newegg special back on 11-28-2008 and it worked perfectly until 2 weeks ago. I purchased this drive to replace my LG BD (Model: GGC-H20L) which stopped being recognized by my computer & Vista. Quick answer: LG Customer Support (80) is EXCELLENT. Many times we purchase a product based on what others have to say about product support. Overall Review: My real reason for writing this review is to pass along my experience with LG Customer Support.
